Ghana Tourism Authority is the state agency in charge of all the tourist attractions and heritage sites in Ghana. The agency’s primary role is to see to the day to day efficient running of the country’s tourist sites as well as promotion and marketing of these attractions to ensure they receive the needed patronage to generate enough revenue for the state.
The Authority was initially known as Ghana Tourism Board until 2011 when the Ghana Tourism Act was established by the Tourism Act, 2011 (Act 817) to serve as the body responsible for implementation of policies by the Ministry of Tourism.
The new act gave the authority other functions which included:
-Facilitation of the development of tourist facilities and products
-Conducting extensive research and studies on the latest trends in the tourism industry to aid decision making and policy formulation
-The promotion and marketing of tourism both at home and abroad mainly through the publication of materials in international journals and participation in tourism fairs and exhibition around the world.
