The Saint Kitts and Nevis Golden Passport Program has become an attractive option for many wealthy internationals seeking citizenship by investment. However, recent investigations by the EU and the US have raised concerns about passport sales through similar programs in five Caribbean islands. The increased demand for these citizenship-by-investment schemes has led to scrutiny from international authorities.
These programs offer internationals the opportunity to obtain citizenship in Caribbean countries for as little as $100,000, providing tax benefits and visa-free access to Europe. In Saint Kitts, the golden passport initiative was projected to generate a significant portion of the country’s revenue, but security concerns have been raised about the program.
Despite these concerns, St. Kitts-Nevis Prime Minister Terrance Drew has emphasized the importance of the Citizenship by Investment Programme (CBI) for the twin-island Federation. He highlighted the program as an illustrative pathway for high-net-worth individuals and families seeking legal citizenship in the territory. The CBI has undergone strict reformation aimed at fortifying its integrity and reliability.
Prime Minister Drew has committed to improving the program and ensuring its integrity is a top priority. He emphasized the implementation of mandatory interviews and multilayered due diligence checks to uphold compliance with both local regulations and international best practices.
In addition to the economic benefits of these programs, concerns have been raised about illegal activities such as money laundering and tax evasion. Last year, a joint project of the Financial Action Task Force and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development highlighted the potential for criminal elements to exploit citizenship by investment programs for illicit purposes.
Despite the challenges, Saint Kitts and Nevis continue to support and improve their CBI program while addressing concerns about security and integrity. The country’s commitment to implementing strict compliance measures and thorough due diligence checks aims to ensure that the program serves as a positive example for the international community.
