Denmark is considering tightening its current rules to make it more difficult for foreigners to obtain permanent residence permits and reunite with their spouses living in a foreign country. The Danish Ministry of Immigration and Integration has proposed this move, aiming to bring about changes to the regulations related to permanent residence permits and family reunification of spouses.
One significant amendment proposed by the Ministry is the tightening of rules for these two categories. The exact details of the new rules have not been revealed, but the Danish Immigration Service has emphasized that individuals with convictions for certain crimes may not be eligible for a permanent residence permit. Even facing charges for crimes in the future could prevent an individual from securing permanent residence status in Denmark.
The proposal also includes stringent measures for transferred requirements for permanent residence permits when applying for family reunification of spouses, especially if the spouse in the country is a foreigner but not a refugee.
If accepted, the new rules will apply to applications submitted after the proposal is presented to the Danish parliament. However, applications currently under consideration will be subject to existing rules unless a decision is made before the proposed changes take effect.
It’s worth noting that Denmark is no stranger to changing its immigration laws. Just recently, the country announced that it will revoke temporary residence permits of refugees if they travel to their home countries, starting from January 1, 2024. This decision followed a vote that took place on December 7, 2023.
Denmark’s proactive approach to tightening its immigration rules reflects the country’s commitment to managing its immigration processes and ensuring the safety and security of its borders. As these proposed changes navigate through the legislative process, it’s important for prospective applicants to stay updated on the latest developments to avoid any potential impact on their immigration status.
