Spain is one of the hard-hit countries by the deadly pandemic in Europe, with over 3.5 million infections and 79,000 deaths recorded so far.
Wearing of mask and social distancing in public places and staying at home, were the initial precautions before travel restrictions.
Here is where Spain lies in terms of travel restrictions across its borders by land, sea, and air.
According to the Spanish authorities:
- Passengers traveling to international/non‑Schengen area destinations will be allowed entry provided their transit period is less than 24 hours and they do not leave the airport.
- From March 26, 2021, to May 25, 2021, a temporary restriction has been applied to flights from Brazil or South Africa into Spain.
- Only Spanish and Andorran nationals and foreign nationals with legal residence in Spain/Andorra are allowed to enter the country, as well as passengers in transit with final destination in a Non‑Schengen country.
Effective 1 May 2021 until 31 May 2021, Spain is restricted but not limited to the following categories of travelers:
- Spanish Nationals, traveling with their spouse and children.
- Regular residents of the European Union, Schengen associated states.
- Holders of a long‑term visa issued by a member state or Schengen associated state, on their way to such country.
- Holders of a long‑term visa issued by a member state or Schengen associated state, on their way to such country.
- Transport personnel, sailors, and the necessary aeronautical personnel to carry out air transport activities.
- A diplomatic, consular, international organization, military, civil protection, and humanitarian organization personnel in the exercise of their duties.
- Students pursuing their studies and are holding the appropriate permit or visa and medical insurance.
Do you need a PCR test to enter Spain?
Effective March 1, 2021, COVID‑19 PCR testing is required for travelers from all non-EU/EEC countries except;

Quarantine restrictions in Spain
According to the Spanish Ministry of Health, all persons who fly into the country must self-isolate for ten days but can shorten their self-isolation period if they undergo a COVID-19 test on the seventh day and submit a negative test result.
Which countries are banned from entering Spain?
Aside from the United States, Spain has not banned any country from entry. Even with the U.S.A, citizens must meet very specific requirements or obtain special permission from the Government of Spain.
