Filipino travelers might soon find themselves spending more on Schengen visa fees, with a draft proposal from the EU Commission suggesting an increase from €80 to €90 per application. This could mean an additional €1.3 million in expenses for Filipino nationals, who typically submit around 132,000 visa applications annually.
The proposed hike in visa fees is driven by inflation rates, which have been gradually stabilizing in recent years. The EU Office for Statistics reported an annual inflation rate of 3.1 per cent in January 2024, down from 3.4 per cent the previous month and a significant drop from the ten per cent recorded in January 2023.
In addition to the increase in visa application fees, the initiative also aims to raise fees for minor applicants and for countries that do not cooperate on readmission. Service providers are expected to charge higher fees as well, while the application for a visa extension will remain unchanged. These measures could impact the travel opportunities for Filipinos and impose a financial burden on those looking to explore the Schengen Area.
Despite a decline in visa applications during the COVID-19 pandemic, Filipino travelers have been gradually increasing their interest in visiting the EU. This could potentially have an impact on tourism, international student enrollment, and the labor force in the EU, as the increased visa fees may deter Filipinos from traveling for both leisure and work purposes.
As the travel landscape evolves, it’s essential for Filipino travelers to consider how these proposed changes could affect their plans for visiting the Schengen Area. It’s important to stay informed and prepared for any potential adjustments in visa regulations that could impact their travel experiences.
