Brussels Airport has continued to see a steady increase in passenger numbers, with 22.2 million passengers welcomed in 2023, marking a 17% increase from the previous year. This surge in passengers also resulted in a 7% increase in the number of flights, with a total of 192,257 flights passing through the airport.
In December alone, nearly 1.6 million passengers traveled through Brussels Airport, representing a 10% increase from December 2022. The top ten countries with the most travelers during this period were Spain, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, the United States, Switzerland, Türkiye, Morocco, France, and Portugal.
Brussels Airport also saw a recovery in leisure travel, family visits, and business travel post-COVID. However, travel to and from Asia has not fully recovered, and the cancellation of flights to Israel since October has also impacted the airport.
The number of transfer passengers also increased by 21%, with the majority coming from Spain, Germany, Italy, Türkiye, the US, France, Portugal, Greece, Morocco, and the UK. The increase in arrivals was attributed to the airport’s enhanced network for leisure, family visits, and business travel.
While passenger numbers increased, the total cargo experienced a 10% decrease in 2023, with 700,846 tons transported within the airport. Additionally, the airport added new routes and airlines, introducing flights to nine new destinations for the summer season of 2023.
The continuous growth of Brussels Airport indicates a promising outlook for future travel to and from the Belgian capital.
