Attention all Berlin tourists and residents – mark your calendars for the first Sunday of the month! This is your chance to explore 60 of Berlin’s most iconic museums for free. This initiative was originally announced in 2019 but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, it’s finally coming to fruition, offering a unique opportunity for cultural exploration.
Berlin’s Culture Senator, Joe Chialo (CDU), confirmed the extension of the admission-free scheme for the next two years, making cultural exploration accessible to locals and tourists alike. This means that popular museums like the Altes Museum, Gemäldegalerie, and Pergamon Museum, as well as smaller gems like the Werkbundarchiv, Decorative Arts Museum, and Knoblauchhaus Museum, are all included in the list of museums that can be visited.
In 2023, Museum Sunday drew an impressive 750,000 visitors, marking a substantial 35 per cent increase from the previous year. Notably, the most frequent beneficiaries of the scheme were young people from the neighbourhoods surrounding these cultural attractions, highlighting the positive impact on local engagement.
While the opportunity to explore these museums for free is undoubtedly exciting, planning is key to guaranteeing a visit to the most popular locations. For venues such as the Altes Museum, Gemäldegalerie, and Pergamon Museum, visitors are required to secure a ticket and timeslot online. These slots become available one week in advance of each Museum Sunday, and they tend to fill up quickly.
However, for those who miss out on these reservations, many other museums welcome visitors without having to reserve prior to the visit. The flexibility of this scheme encourages exploration and allows individuals to decide on the day where they’d like to spend their afternoon.
For those eager to kick off their museum adventures in 2024, the next Sunday Museum will take place on February 4 – with some three weeks left. In addition, the upcoming dates for Sunday Museum are as follows: February 4, 2024, March 3, 2024, April 7, 2024, May 5, 2024, June 2, 2024, July 7, 2024, August 4, 2024, September 1, 2024, October 6, 2024, November 3, 2024, December 1, 2024.
To plan the visit and explore the available options, visitors are advised to check the official website. Don’t miss out on this incredible opportunity to immerse yourself in Berlin’s vibrant cultural scene.
