Athens International Airport (AIA) had an impressive year in 2023, with over 28 million passengers passing through its gates. This exceeded pre-pandemic levels by almost 10%, showcasing a strong recovery for the airport.
The numbers released for 2023 revealed that Athens International Airport surpassed 2022 levels by 24% and 2019 levels by 10.2%. Notably, domestic and international passengers also exceeded the 2022 levels by 18.9% and 26.4% respectively, and surpassed pre-pandemic levels by 13.3% and 8.8%.
The airport broke its 2019 record in November 2023, with an increase in passenger traffic every month. In December alone, passenger traffic reached 1.86 million, a 17.1% increase from December 2022.
Last year, Athens International Airport had a total of 241,604 flights, a 13.2% increase from 2022 and a 7.1% increase from pre-pandemic levels. Domestic and international flights were also higher, with increases of 7.4% and 18.1% compared to 2022, and 10.5% and 4.6% in comparison to 2019.
The tourism sector in Greece showed significant recovery, with travel receipts for January to October 2023 exceeding all travel receipts in 2019. This amounted to €19.6 billion, a 14.7% increase from the same period in 2022.
The strong performance of Athens International Airport and the overall tourism sector in Greece is a promising sign of recovery and growth for the country’s travel industry.
