Thailand has also had its share of the COVID-19 pandemic and as such has moved to enforce certain restrictions as a response to the spread of the virus.
Is Thailand Open For Tourists?
Thailand is currently not accessible to tourists. Despite the government’s recently announced plans to gradually reopen the country to foreign visitors in a bid to kickstart tourism, the increase in COVID-9 cases says otherwise.
The ban on international flights to Thailand has been extended until 31 May 2021 whiles travel to Thailand is restricted to only specific categories of passengers.
Do you need a PCR test to enter Thailand?
Yes, All travellers must provide a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours of departure. A PCR test must be taken on arrival, after which all travellers must quarantine at government-approved quarantine facilities
Aside from the PCR test, all travellers must provide proof of an insurance policy that covers treatment for Covid-19 up to the cost of $100,000 including COVID medical expenses.
Quarantine restrictions in Thailand
The quarantine period for all passengers, both Thai and foreign nationals regardless of their point of origin and vaccination status, will be no less than 14 days, with the following conditions based on the date their Certificate of Entry (COE) was issued:
- Passengers whose COE is issued from 1 May 2021 onwards will be quarantined for no less than 14 days.
- The quarantine period for passengers whose COE was issued before 1 May 2021 will be considered according to their arrival date.
- Passengers entering Thailand between 1 and 5 May 2021 will be quarantined for 7, 10 or 14 days, based on their country of residence and vaccination status.
The quarantine period will be 10 days (11 nights) for passengers travelling to Thailand between 1 and 5 May 2021 from countries with no cases of COVID 19 variant strains.
All travellers who have received a Certificate of Entry are required to download the ThailandPlus Application and register. Upon arrival in Thailand, they will have to show a QR code that will be scanned by the Thai authorities upon arrival.

- Passengers travelling from the following countries with cases of COVID 19 variant strains must undergo a 14-day quarantine: South Africa, Zimbabwe, Republic of Mozambique, Republic of Botswana, Zambia, Republic of Kenya, Republic of Cameroon, Republic of Rwanda, Congo, Republic of Ghana and the United Republic of Tanzania.
- Passengers travelling to Thailand between 1 and 5 May who have received any of the following vaccines (Pfizer BioNTech, AstraZeneca, Covidshield (Serum Institue of India), Johnson and Johnson, Sinovac, SK BIOSCIENCE AstraZeneca, Moderna and Sinopharm) at least 14 days before departure and can present their vaccination certificate are required to undergo a 7‑day quarantine.
- Passengers travelling to Thailand from 6 May 2021 onwards will be quarantined for no less than 14 days.
Which countries are banned from entering Thailand?
Non‑Thai passengers travelling to Thailand from Pakistan, Bangladesh, India and Nepal are not permitted to enter Thailand.
