Somewhere in February this year, President of the land, H.E Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo Addo decided to reshuffle his cabinet and one of those affected was Mrs. Catherine Afeku.
The then Culture, Arts and Tourism minister was reshuffled and reassigned to the office of the Vice President. She was replaced by Mrs. Barbara Oteng Gyasi.
Mrs. Afeku’s reshuffling from the ministry was met with a mixed feeling as major industry players believed she was not up to the task and under-performed during her time in the ministry. However three months into the tenure of Mrs. Oteng Gyasi, people are asking questions especially of her whereabouts.
Unlike her predecessor who was very visible in the media, Mrs. Barbara Oteng Gyasi is quite media shy and rarely seen making public appearances or appearing in the media. Interestingly some social media users even claimed they have never seen the new tourism minister before and wouldn’t recognize her if she stood by them.
While her lack of public appearances or media shy nature does not suggest she isn’t performing her duty efficiently, many are of the belief that an Art and Tourism minister must be seen more often in the public space, especially at entertainment and tourism events.
Many also complained that since Mrs. Catherine Afeku’s removal, the aura and excitement surrounding the ambitious Year of Return project launched by her has faded.
