The UK government has announced that the UK-India Young Professionals Scheme (YPS) 2025 ballot will open next week. Starting 18 February, young Indians aged 18 to 30 can apply for one of 3,000 spots to live, work, and study in the UK for up to two years. The ballot closes on 20 February, and entry is free.
To qualify, applicants must be at least 18 years old when they plan to travel, hold a degree equivalent to a UK bachelor’s or higher, and show proof of £2,530 in savings to support themselves. Successful candidates will be chosen at random and notified by email within two weeks of the ballot closing. They’ll then have 90 days to complete their visa application, including paying the visa fee and immigration health surcharge.
Lindy Cameron, the British High Commissioner to India, encouraged young people across the country to apply. “The Young Professionals Scheme is a fantastic way for Brits and Indians to build a modern understanding of each other’s countries,” she said. “Whether you’re from Itanagar, Coimbatore, Leh, Surat, Bhubaneshwar, or Indore, I urge you to take this opportunity.”
Since its launch in February 2023, the YPS has been a popular initiative. Over 2,100 visas were issued to Indian nationals in the year ending December 2023. The scheme is part of the UK’s broader effort to strengthen ties with India, offering young professionals a chance to gain international experience and cultural exposure.
Applicants should be wary of fraudulent visa agents or agencies claiming to guarantee a spot in the scheme for a fee. The ballot is free, and all official guidance is available on the GOV.UK website.
Selected participants must return to India after their two-year stay in the UK. Similarly, British nationals interested in traveling to India under the scheme can find details on the High Commission of India on London’s website.
The YPS represents a unique opportunity for young Indians to explore life in the UK while contributing to the growing relationship between the two nations. Those interested should ensure they meet the eligibility criteria and submit their entries during the ballot window next week.
