The European Union Commission has announced discussions with Armenia to initiate a visa liberalization dialogue, aiming to strengthen relations and facilitate entry for Armenians into the EU. EU Commissioner for International Relationships, Jutta Urpilainen, emphasized the importance of people-to-people contact and expressed Armenia’s interest in deepening its ties with the EU.
Commissioner Urpilainen highlighted the historic moment for EU-Armenia relations, stating that they have never been stronger. The launch of the visa liberalization dialogue is seen as a significant step that would send a clear message to Armenian citizens and encourage further reforms.
Armenians have expressed frustration over the prolonged visa liberalization process, questioning why Georgians and Moldovans enjoy visa-free entry while Armenians still require visas to enter the EU. Some suggest that more EU investments in Armenia could create job opportunities and discourage people from leaving the country.
Armenia currently benefits from a Visa Facilitation Agreement with the EU, allowing Armenians to apply for Schengen visas under simplified rules and a reduced visa fee of €35, compared to the general €80 fee for other nationals. This agreement aims to facilitate travel for Armenians and strengthen ties between Armenia and the EU.
