Travel for Russian nationals to Schengen Area countries has become easier, according to the Russian Union of Travel Industry (RST). The RST claims that the application procedures for a Schengen Visa have been streamlined, with some countries issuing visas to Russian nationals within shorter periods and having a higher issuance rate.

Switzerland, for example, is reported to issue visas to Russian passport holders in an average of two weeks. Italy and Spain are also highlighted as being particularly welcoming to Russian tourists, with the RST calling them “the most loyal” to Russian tourists. The Consulate of Spain has also recently simplified the visa application process, making it easier for Russian nationals to obtain visas.

According to the Russian Aeroclub business tourism agency, Switzerland is the seventh country in terms of visa admissions for Russian passport holders. Additionally, statistics show that one-fourth of visas obtained by Russian passport holders in 2022 were issued by Spanish authorities.

Interestingly, France is noted for providing visas with the longest validity to Russian travelers, with a processing time of only two and a half weeks. According to tour operators, the French consulate willingly issues visas to Russians for extended periods, including up to five years.

On the other hand, Hungary is lauded for its high issuance rate and the Director of Development of the operator “Turtrans-Voyage” mentioned that 70% of the company’s tourists received multiple-entry visas from Hungary.

Despite these improvements, there are still challenges, such as making appointments and limited visas issued for the required dates of the planned trip.

It is important to note, however, that the country that takes the longest to issue a Schengen visa in Russia is Croatia, with applicants needing to wait up to two months for a response. Even though demand for visas from this country in Russia remains low, it is still a developing destination for Russian nationals.

Overall, with certain Schengen Area countries implementing easier visa processes and higher issuance rates for Russian travelers, the opportunities for travel to these destinations are expanding, providing new and exciting possibilities for Russian tourists.
