The European Commission’s recent report on the tourism industry’s progress in the ecological and digital transition has revealed some promising results. This report, released two years after its initial publication, highlights the positive actions and commitments made by tourism stakeholders from the EU and beyond. These actions mainly focus on supporting the ecological transition of the industry.
One notable example is the commitment made by the Pays de la Loire region to develop sustainable connectivity by 2030, aiming for all destinations to be accessible by environmentally-friendly means of transport. The European Commission’s website showcases this and other such initiatives to provide concrete examples for others to follow.
In addition to the ecological transition, the Commission has also taken significant steps to support the digital transition of the tourism sector. This includes actions such as regulating Short-Term Accommodation Rentals and creating a Common European Data Space for Tourism. The Commission has also introduced multiple funding opportunities through the European Union Tourism Funding Guide and established a “Together for EU Tourism (T4T)” expert group for knowledge sharing.
Member States have also shown support for the transition journey through various measures, with the EU Council publishing an EU program for tourism by 2030 in December 2022. The Council emphasized the importance of promoting sustainable tourism in response to climate change and loss of biodiversity, as well as the need for a more resilient tourism ecosystem in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, the reopening of the tourism ecosystem presents an opportunity for a green and digital transformation towards a more resilient future. The European Agenda for Tourism 2030 also highlights the need for transparency in the relations between hosts, online platforms, and public bodies. As the industry moves towards a more sustainable and innovative future, the efforts of all stakeholders are crucial in achieving these goals.
