Revival of High-Speed Rail Route Between Italy & Slovenia After a Century

A new train route connecting Milan and Ljubljana is set to launch, making travel between the two cities more convenient than ever. The agreement reached between Italian train company Trenitalia and Slovenian Railways, SŽ Passenger Transport, will see a direct route taking passengers from Milan to Ljubljana in just seven hours.

The new service, expected to start in April, will be operated by a Frecciarossa train, passing through iconic Italian cities such as Venice and Trieste. Along the way, the train will make stops at some of Slovenia’s natural attractions, including the Postojna Caves, Skocjan Caves, and Lipica, known for its Lipizzaner horses.

With a promising restoration of cross-border service between Italy and Slovenia, the new train route is a welcome addition to sustainable travel options in Europe. The Italian government has pledged significant funding to upgrade the Venice-Trieste line, while the Slovenian rail lines are also being tested to explore potential improvements.

The move towards promoting environmentally friendly travel extends beyond just this new route. In October last year, the Austrian Federal Railways introduced new night trains connecting Vienna to various destinations across Europe, including Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Switzerland.

One company specializing in Tourist Intelligence, Mbarian, conducted a study showing the potential for significant reductions in carbon emissions by shifting from domestic flights to rail travel. By replacing short-distance flights with high-speed trains, there is potential for annual CO2 emissions to be reduced by one million tonnes.

As Europe continues to explore ways of reducing carbon emissions, the potential of rail travel as a sustainable and cost-effective means of transport becomes increasingly clear. With new routes, improved infrastructure, and a growing focus on environmentally friendly travel options, the future of rail travel in Europe looks bright.
