Malta Airport Reports Record-Breaking Passenger Numbers in 2023
Malta Airport has exceeded its 2019 levels by 6.7 per cent, reaching a record of 7.8 million passengers in 2023. This is great news for the airport, as they have not seen numbers like this since 2019. The airport company is now anticipating welcoming eight million passengers in 2024, which is a significant milestone.
Not only has the passenger traffic increased, but Malta Airport is also aiming to achieve a total revenue of €126 million. The EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) is expected to reach €79 million, with a net profit of €42 million. Planned CAPEX is expected to reach €45 million, showcasing the airport’s financial success.
Alan Borg, CEO of the airport company, expressed his optimism for the future, despite the ongoing macroeconomic and geopolitical challenges. He also revealed the company’s plans to expand the airport’s capacity in 2024, including phases of terminal expansion and Apron X construction. Work on the VIP Terminal and SkyParks Business Centre 2 is also set to begin this year.
The partnership between Malta Airport and Malta Tourism Authority has contributed to the record success of the Maltese tourism industry. Leslie Vella, Deputy CEO of Malta Tourism Authority, commended the collaboration and committed to ongoing sustainable growth throughout the year.
Throughout 2023, Malta Airport experienced increased passenger traffic, with the highest number of passengers recorded in August. This figure exceeded 2019 levels by 6.7 per cent, indicating a significant recovery for the airport.
In addition to passenger traffic, Malta has also seen an increase in tourists since 2019. The number of Chinese travelers visiting Malta has grown, and in 2022, the country welcomed approximately 2.3 million tourists, reaching 83 per cent of 2019 levels. This is a promising sign for the Maltese tourism industry.
