Canada to Make Changes to International Study Permit for 2024
On January 22nd, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced that it is implementing changes to stabilize growth and decrease the number of international study permits for international students in 2024.
To better align the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) with these changes, IRCC announced updates to the program’s eligibility criteria. This includes international students who begin a study program that is part of a curriculum licensing agreement will no longer be eligible for a PGWP after graduating. This aims to mitigate situations in which colleges revoke letters of acceptance due to overenrollment or lack of resources for international students.
In addition to these changes, IRCC also announced that graduates of master’s and other short graduate-level programs will soon be eligible to apply for a 3-year work permit. This is a significant update that will allow master’s students to be eligible for a longer work permit, providing them with an extended opportunity to gain valuable Canadian work experience.
The PGWP is an open work permit that allows international graduates to work for any Canadian employer without needing a job offer. It’s valid for up to three years, with the actual length depending on the length of the study program in Canada. To be eligible, international students must have a variety of qualifications, including completing studies at an eligible Designated Learning Institution, holding full-time student status in Canada during every academic session, obtaining a transcript and official letter from the DLI, and more.
Overall, these changes aim to create a more controlled and sustainable environment for international students in Canada. They provide opportunities for students to gain work experience and transition to permanent residency in Canada, while addressing capacity and resource challenges faced by colleges.
