Hungary to Restrict Work Visas for Foreign Temporary Workers
The Hungarian Ministry of Economy has announced plans to limit the number of work visas issued to foreign temporary workers. The country will only issue 65,000 visas for temporary workers from non-European Union countries this year. In addition to restricting the number of visas issued, the government will also prohibit foreign temporary workers from taking up jobs in certain sectors.
The move to limit visas for temporary workers outside the EU is aimed at protecting local jobs and providing employment opportunities for Hungarian citizens. The decision comes as Hungary seeks to revive its economy, which has been negatively impacted by inflation. In an effort to prioritize local employment, the government has identified approximately 300 jobs that non-EU nationals will not be permitted to take.
According to the Hungarian Ministry of Economy, the government’s goal is to safeguard Hungarian jobs and families. Foreign workers will only be allowed to fill open positions if there are no qualified Hungarian workers available. The unemployment rate in Hungary stood at 4.3 percent between September and November of last year, prompting the country to prioritize its citizens for job opportunities.
In addition to restricting work visas, Hungary also aims to target mass migration by tightening employment opportunities for foreign nationals. The country plans to clarify eligibility criteria for residing in Hungary for work purposes and strictly limit the period of stay for foreign workers. This decision reflects Hungary’s commitment to ensuring job opportunities for its own citizens before considering foreign workers for employment.
