Berlin has recently unveiled a new online application form for citizenship, providing foreigners in the city with a streamlined process for learning about their eligibility and applying for German citizenship. Since January 1, 2024, the State Immigration Office, LEA, has taken on the responsibility of assessing citizenship eligibility and processing applications, replacing the previous district-based system.
Residents of Berlin without a German passport can now visit their local LEA’s website to fill out an online form. Once completed, the form provides a personalized statement regarding their eligibility for citizenship. The online form assesses applicants based on current citizenship rules, which require proof of legal residency in Germany for at least six years, as well as knowledge of the German language at the B1 level and no history of claiming unemployment benefits.
Upon meeting these criteria, applicants can begin the paperwork and submit required documents through the website. The application fee is €225 per person, payable once other procedures are completed. Berlin’s Interior Senator, Iris Spranger, expressed the goal of increasing naturalization rates in the city and emphasized the significance of centralizing the process.
LEA is now responsible for processing over 34,000 pending cases, the majority of which are naturalization applications. In 2022, 8,875 foreigners were granted German citizenship in Berlin, and by November 30, 2023, 8,640 people had been naturalized.
The authorities encourage all eligible Berliners to apply for citizenship, noting that it is essential for comprehensive social participation and involvement, including participation in elections. This latest development is important for the residents of Berlin, making the process of acquiring citizenship more accessible and efficient.
