Cracking the Code: Pronouncing Singapore Locally

Malay Pronunciation (Singapura): In the local language of Singapore, Malay, the correct pronunciation is “Singapura.”

The “o” in “Singapura” echoes the sound in “hot.”
The “e” in “Singapore” resonates with the sound in “get.”

Putting it together: “Singuh-pura”

English Pronunciation: In English, the accepted pronunciation is “Singuh-pore.”

Why Singapore is the Lion City

The moniker “Lion City” has its roots in an intriguing legend that weaves mythology into Singapore’s historical narrative.

In ancient times, Singapore was known as Temasek, a Javanese term meaning “sea town.” The transformation into “Singapura,” or Lion City, is a tale etched in folklore.

According to legend, Sang Nila Utama, a prince from Palembang, Indonesia, embarked on a voyage and set foot on the island of Temasek.

The defining moment occurred when he beheld a majestic creature that resembled a lion, a symbol of strength and courage in many cultures.

Inspired by this auspicious encounter, the island was bestowed with the name “Singapura,” derived from the Sanskrit words “simha” (lion) and “pura” (city).

The lion, symbolic of regality and might, became an emblem of Singapore’s identity.

The legend of Sang Nila Utama’s lion sighting has endured through generations, and the lion remains an iconic representation of Singapore, adorning the nation’s emblems and monuments.
