These freebies seem to be the norm in the country and as such are not advertised. So next time you make a hotel reservation in Addis Ababa either for a long stay or layover, request for them.
Airport Pickup
Save money on airport pickup by looking out for the hotel’s shuttle in the hotel’s car park. To make things easier for you, notify the hotel about your flight and arrival details so that they can be there on time to pick you up, and for free.
The hotel’s shuttle brings you back to the airport. Just leave your departure details with the receptionist.
Sauna And Steam
Free Saunas and steam baths are common among Ethiopian hotels. All hotels come with a Spa; gym, sauna, steam, massage, and others. The Sauna and steam bath are usually available to hotel guests for free while others are discounted.
Discounted Massage For Guests
All hotels, at least all those in Addis Ababa, offer body massage services for both their guests and the public. Guests are given discounts on massage services.
After considering the above freebies, note if any of the items below are of utmost importance to you, ask the hotel about their availability:
Air Conditioner or heating system
All the hotels I have stayed at in Addis Ababa do not come with air conditioners, heating systems, and ceiling fans. My tour guide thinks the weather conditions in Ethiopia don’t make it necessary to have these. That isn’t enough reason because it was cold during one of my visits and needed a heater in the room.
So if you will need any of the items mentioned, filter the search results on the hotel booking platforms to display hotels with the amenities you want.
Mosquitoes
Mosquitoes joined me in my room. My room was changed after the hotel failed to provide me with mosquito spray. They still followed me to the new room lol. These rooms have no fans or air conditioners to at least keep the mosquitoes away.
Malaria is a common disease in Ethiopia. Talk to your doctor/GP when traveling to a malaria-prone country.
